XF 3 General Information & Discussion

I found that the default style works better than the other styles i've used.
So i've deleted the other styles i was using.

They seemed to be buggy.

I'm going to see if the new updated ones work.

Before thinking about XF 3 I would be delighted to have an ETA on the resolution of the various and numerous unresolved bugs.

A little surprised that xf 3 isn't a complete rewrite like xf 2, since the core code base is from 2017?
I don’t understand this “needs a complete rewrite” logic, because it’s just not usually true.

Windows hasn’t had a “complete rewrite” in 20 years and no one says we need to rewrite it as such. (And even then, the changes in XP->Vista weren’t a complete rewrite, only a partial one.)

Well even if they 3.0 was ready for a beta which it's not, they would still wait probably at least a month for any outstanding bugs to surface in 2.3 now that it's public.

Weneed to rewrite it.
Why? What possible benefit could such a rewrite bring other than all the things you use with it won’t work? (There is a direct parallel here between a theoretical XF 3 rewrite and a theoretical Windows rewrite. Not to mention all the bugs you will produce in working with untested and unproven code.)

Just to avoid any further speculation, the release of XF 3.0 is not imminent.
We’re currently on XF v2.2.16 and thinking of skipping v2.3 (too much damage to our style and thus too much work to recover). Will we be able to upgrade from v2.2.16 straight to v3.0?

Odd question, but when you upgrade, doesn't the database "walk through" all the changes for each version released? I.e. even if you skipped 2.3, technically from a database perspective it'd go through all the 2.3.X revisions and then whatever is there for v3?

So the idea of skipping 2.3, IMO, and arguably, makes it more risk during upgrade?

Yeah it steps through all of the upgrade steps. You can go from 1.0 all the way to 2.3 in theory. This doesn’t present any more or less risk, I’m not sure where the additional risk would come from.

Yes, upgrading between multiple versions upgrades each version in turn.

There is really no additional risk, other than the specific issues there have been related to new options, which will be addressed in a later release.

The way the upgrader works is it performs each upgrade step in a new request or splits it across multiple requests so there’s no risk of any timeouts or memory limits being hit or some such.

If you're stuck let one of the staff upgrade it for you.
I remember being just as worried about upgrading the forum when Chris D popped over and did it for me. At the time i was 1.2.5 and heading to 2.0.
After that i managed to do the upgrades.
