cheers.. part of it is due to style used thanks to to @Russ and then Centmin Mod LEMP stack with ngx_pagespeed. And helps to have a nice speedy server setup - 4GB Linode VPS for me

I was talking about what Webpagetest.org calls "Start Render". My sites struggle with this parameter on any thread page that has much on it. Yours seem to always do well.

See how your site starts to have visible elements on the page at 1.1s and mine at 2.1s? Is that because much of your CSS seems to be either inlined or deferred? And if so, how do you do that?

I'm using pretty much all the same pagespeed filters as @eva2000 , but his site seems to load CSS after page starts to show, while mine waits for CSS. Unless I'm reading the data wrong, that's the main speed difference.

If you look at the waterfall on webpagetest, his non-inlined css comes in late.

I've turned back on BDCache. Maybe I need to wait for pagespeed to learn which CSS is critical.

Yes.
Load the page a few times, if possible as guest so that css is static.

It's interesting, my busier site with a bunch of ad scripts loads faster than my non-busy site with no ads on the same server:
