Announcing Forum Runner - XenForo iPhone/iPad/Android App!

gotvirtual.net

i am hearing that users cannot 'save forum choices', and that forums have to continually be searched for. im not sure exactly what that means. i have no smartphone myself to test any of this.

They probably mean favorite. They need to search for "gotvirtual" then tap on it, then on the forum screen, tap the upper right corner and choose "Add to Favorites". Then it will show up on their home screen.

Incidentally, this is also in our help system if they hit the "Help" menu and chose "How do I add forums to my home screen?" :-)

I installed Forum Runner App today and it appears to be functioning as expected. As I am using DroidX I would love to see Android OS support to match capabilities of the iPhone... if at all possible??? peace

There are only a few things that the iPhone has that Android doesn't currently. What are you referring to exactly?

#1, yes, that is not in Android.
#2, that does exist in Android. On the main menu go to Favorites, it will poll all the messages/subscriptions of your favorited forums that you are logged into from there.
#3, Poll support is in Android OS, was added a version or two ago.

Clemson, unfortunatly that fix did not last that long for the cookies. today it seems to have gone back to the way it was.

I should have a good amount of mobile traffic this upcoming weekend, so was hoping to have that pop up fixed before then.

You have a PM. Once that new code is installed let me know if that fixes the issue. Otherwise I will need to debug it remotely again (have you enable it so I can look at it).

I tried a couple of searches from forums with the paid client app on my android device, and got a message that "This application just crashed, but a report has been sent to the developers.. blah blah blah". Does forum search not work?

This seems to happen on almost forum I visit, when I click the "search" button at the bottom of the screen with the magnifying glass, and I enter anything in the keyword box, or username box. Other forum searches give me an error "The remote server sent an unparsable result. This could be a result of the forum software plugin being outdated."

Also, maybe understandably, it doesn't parse "media" bbcodes for xenforo, so none of those phrases will be parsed as URL's in forum runner.

I just realized that if there is a "link forum" displayed in the node tree of your public list of forums, that link won't be formatted in forum runner when clicked. This would make sense I think because forum runner wouldn't recognize a link node as a xenforo thread.

The push notifications for Android are flaky, no matter what I try, forumrunner doesn't seem to think I'm logged into Google, which I am. Sometimes its enabled, sometimes it isn't. I wouldn't trust push notifications on time sensitive information.

Finally, it doesn't appear that this supports members that have registered/log-in on a site via Facebook Connect? They would have to request a local password reset, then confirm the password reset, get the new password in email, and use that temporary password to log into the forum via forumrunner?

I have one question. Say we go the branded route for vb and plan on moving everything over to XF when we can, are there any extra fees to make the switch?

Nope, but if the URL changes at all (to the base forum) then the app will need to be updated with the new one. The URL is hard-coded into the compiled app so that your app does not need to request information from our servers in order for your users to connect to your forum.

It should. Can you let me know which forum this is happening on?

That could be any number of things. If they forum owner hasn't set up the add-on properly, if they are running Sphinx and didn't install it properly, etc.

The push notifications built into Android OS are flaky in general. They are still making this framework more robust. It didn't even come out until Android OS 2.2. Sadly, I've seen a lot of things with Android that are released half-baked (such as Market issues that I have no control over - downloads stalling, charges failing, etc).

This will have to be a feature I add later. We haven't added any Facebook integration (yet).

For example, Forum Runner is the only mobile application I know to properly implement search functionality with other software. Searchlight works out of the box with it, while Tapatalk is a pure disaster. From a developer point of view, Tapatalk could bring your server to its knees if you enable certain "features". Is not the end user who will pay the price, but rather the forum owner... just make sure you watch your slow query logs.
