For now the workaround is to embed the image into the post and then change its size to 0 width. It doesn't render inside the post but will be used for the cover image.

This is how we end up with a different cover image on the article listing that doesn't actually appear to be embedded anywhere in the article content.

I had actually assumed that we took care of this case already but I think it's reasonable to make changes here.
